US Election 2024 ๐บ๐ธ
Vote Weight Calculator by State
This calculator tells you the relative weight for a vote in the 2024 US Presidential election, given the State. That is, by choosing a State below, the value in the table will show you the relative weight of a vote in that State compared with your chosen State.
โ
For example, if you chose California as your State, then the table would show that the relative weight for Alaska is 3.04. This suggests that an Alaskan's vote carries 3.04 times more weight in the Presidential election than yours. See discussion under "How the calculator works" for more details.
โ
The State that has the highest weight vote is Wyoming, with 150,422 voting age citizens per electoral college vote. The lowest weight vote belongs to Florida, with 598,282 voting age citizens per electoral college vote.

How the calculator works
This calculator uses the 2022 data on voting age populations by state, as well as the number of electoral college votes for 2024, to work out what the voter weight is for each state, allowing a comparison to be made.
โ
The calculation to compare, say, Wyoming to California, is to first calculate the "electoral college votes per voter" for both states. This is done by dividing the number of electoral college votes for the state, by the voting age population of the state.
Then, the ratio for Wyoming is divided by the ratio for California, to get the relative weight of Wyoming's vote compared to California.
โ
It's worth mentioning that this simple calculator really doesn't take into account the effect of first-past-the-post dynamics in the states that have such a system.

Professor Durran looked at something similar after the 2016 Presidential election, however using more post-hoc data and a different analysis method. Check it out.
